8 March
The herring spawn continues, although there doesn't seem to be much action off the Estuary. There are many gulls and many boats, all headed northwards along the shore to where, presumably, the action is.
(Those aren't flaws in the photo--enlarge the image and you'll see a big flock of gulls.)
The morning started out quite ominous, and there were showers, but gradually things cleared.
It was definitely one of those days when the clouds told their tales.
...And there were birds:
A handsome steller's jay--wearing his dark navy colours well, I think.
And a flicker, doing something that I've not seen other woodpeckers do--
--although they certainly could, with beaks constructed for drilling into wood. I often find holes in the ground that have been drilled by flickers. This one was very industrious.
9 March
A sunny day, relatively mild.
I can't really figure out what this deer is saying--I couldn't hear anything but she appears to be commenting on something.
The Straits were busy again with the herring harvest, both boats and gulls.
I'd been wondering about the state of affairs in the eagle nests, but today there was no question. Here she is:
I watched for maybe 15 minutes as she arranged the nest. I'll continue to monitor.
There is an increasing amount of new foliage starting on the trees along the river. I love this season, with the new growth appearing.
11 March
A very quiet morning, with the sky portending the following days of rain and wind.
